Abstract Expressionism is the first major American art movement to achieve international influence, emerging in New York in the 1940s and richly represented in MoMA's collection. The movement encompassed two broad tendencies: the gestural 'action painting' characterized by energetic, improvisational mark-making, and the color field painting using large areas of color to evoke emotional or spiritual states.
